Our Story

Cafeto Colombian Coffee owners and founders, Nelson and his wife came to the United States from Colombia as refugees. Leaving behind their know way of life, family and customs, this family experienced first-hand the painful sadness of knowing exactly what Colombia faces because of violence and social inequalities. Nelson is an architect and his wife is a lawyer who from the moment they came to the United Sates have been working hard to move forward and secure a better future for their children.  They are doing this despite the fact that Nelson suffers from Retinitis Pigmentosa, a condition which significantly impairs his eyesight. Thanks to his rehabilitation, Nelson is a very capable and productive person who seeks to live a normal life as much as possible.

With the hopes and dreams of building a better life for their family, Nelson and his wife wanted to also connect their previous life in Colombia with their new life in the United States. Without the possibility to implement their past careers, their new calling has been starting this business of selling and distributing the best Colombian coffee, which also connects them with their family, history, culture and hopefully with consumers alike. What makes this coffee so unique is its connection with social action in Colombia and also with the empowering reality of fair trade.  This is the legacy they want to pass on to their children and thus preserve and share the rich Colombian coffee tradition. As a witness of their many struggles faced as a refugee family, Nashua the youngest of the children already shows great entrepreneurial attitude as a young woman.
